Optimism regarding the ease of restrictions and the speed of the economic recovery helped sharemarkets regain some of their poise in April. However, major uncertainties remain about what the new ‘normal’ will look like as various countries gradually allow businesses to re-open their doors.
The length and depth of the current economic downturn as well as the speed and strength of the recovery remains almost impossible to predict. We expect sharemarkets will remain choppy for the foreseeable future until the prospects for the global economy and various sectors’ profitability become clearer. Markets generally recover before economies recover.
